China’s New Export Rules to Reshape Algeria’s Auto Imports

Algiers – New regulations announced by Chinese authorities are poised to significantly impact Algeria’s car import market, particularly for vehicles sourced from China. The measures, set to take effect in January 2026, introduce stricter controls on automobile exports, potentially reshaping import strategies for Algerian businesses.

According to official sources, China will restrict the export of brand-new vehicles through traditional commercial channels. The new rules primarily permit the export of used cars that have been registered for more than 180 days. Vehicles used for a shorter period will be classified as ‘near-new’ and can only be exported if the manufacturer provides official certification confirming their used status.

The new regulations directly affect Chinese manufacturers, stipulating that only they can directly export new vehicles. This measure is expected to limit the activities of intermediaries and private entities that typically purchase new cars and ship them abroad. Consequently, future import operations – outside of manufacturing routes – will be largely restricted to used vehicles.

Observers suggest that this move aims to regulate the export market, redirecting a portion of new car sales to the domestic market. Furthermore, it seeks to enhance official control over transaction volumes and channel them through officially recognized routes.

These impending restrictions are expected to have a direct impact on markets heavily reliant on car imports from China, including Algeria. Importers may need to re-evaluate their strategies before the measures come into force early next year. The changes could necessitate a shift in focus towards sourcing older, used vehicles, or forging direct partnerships with Chinese manufacturers. The long-term implications for Algerian consumers and the automotive sector remain to be seen.
