Heroes Battle Flames as Wildfires Threaten Tipaza

DZWatch Exclusive: While many across Algeria prepared for a peaceful Thursday evening, a fierce battle against raging wildfires was unfolding in the forests of Tipaza and neighboring regions. This was a fight not waged with weapons, but with unwavering dedication, courage, and self-sacrifice. As the Friday sun rose over Algeria, victory belonged to the heroes who had battled through the night.

It is no easy feat to stand against a wall of fire consuming everything in its path, knowing that terrified families, vulnerable children, and homes teetering on the brink of destruction lie behind you. It is daunting to advance towards the flames while gale-force winds propel the fire at speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour, smoke chokes the air, and the intense heat scorches your skin. Yet, the men and women of the Civil Protection forces did precisely that, and so much more.

More than 350 personnel in Tipaza alone, supported by 97 fire trucks, aircraft soaring through a smoke-filled sky, and hundreds more across ten different provinces… all abandoned the comfort of their homes and families to protect others. This is the true meaning of duty – placing your own life on the line so that others may sleep soundly.

What is truly commendable is not only the bravery of these individuals, but also the seamless coordination and perfect harmony between various agencies. The People’s National Army, with its aircraft and personnel; the security forces and the national gendarmerie, ensuring evacuations and securing the perimeter; the forestry services; local communities; the Algerian Red Crescent; the Ministries of Health and Solidarity… all stood united.

There was no bureaucracy, no hesitation, no delay, only a rapid response and tireless work that continued for hours without fatigue. Even neighboring provinces readily extended a helping hand. Blida dispatched an additional 55 personnel and 12 fire trucks to support their brothers and sisters in Tipaza, and eight community solidarity units were mobilized from various regions. This exemplifies the spirit of a united nation, where everyone rushes to the aid of their fellow citizens without hesitation or expectation of reward.

We must also acknowledge those who worked silently behind the scenes: the doctors and nurses who treated 91 cases of smoke inhalation and injuries; the psychologists who provided support to those affected, especially children and the elderly; and the Algerian Red Crescent volunteers who evacuated 38 families in Muslimoun alone and provided essential aid. These are the unsung heroes of this crisis.
