Rome, November 16, 2025 – Algerian dates have achieved a significant international victory with the adoption of the final version of the Codex Alimentarius standard for fresh dates. This landmark decision was made during the 48th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, held at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters in Rome from November 10th to 14th, 2025.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Internal Trade, this achievement is the culmination of Algeria’s dedicated efforts to champion the unique characteristics of Algerian dates and highlight their distinctive qualities within international expert committees. Algeria actively participated in the development of this standard through a joint ministerial team comprised of experts from the Ministry of Internal Trade and Regulation of the National Market, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The Algerian team provided precise technical and scientific contributions during various sessions and discussions. These contributions were instrumental in ensuring that the specific qualities of Algerian dates, particularly ‘Deglet Nour’ dates, were incorporated into the adopted international standards. Deglet Nour is a very popular variety of date fruit originating in Algeria.
The Ministry’s statement emphasizes that the adoption of this international standard represents a strategic gain that will enhance the access of Algerian dates to foreign markets, bolster their competitiveness, and solidify international recognition of the quality of this national product. Securing this standard will undoubtedly promote the export of dates and consolidate Algeria’s position as a major player in the international date market.
This recognition will provide a framework for fair practices in the international trade of dates, promoting transparency and consumer trust. It also underscores Algeria’s commitment to quality and adherence to international standards in the agricultural sector.
