Gara Djebilet Mine Set to Begin Operations in Early 2026

Algiers – Algeria is poised to commence exploitation of the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine in the first quarter of 2026, according to announcements made following a Council of Ministers meeting chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday.

The primary objective of the Gara Djebilet project is to achieve national self-sufficiency in iron ore and progressively reduce the country’s import bill. The government views the mine as a critical component of its strategy to diversify the economy and strengthen domestic industries.

Furthermore, the completion of the railway line connecting Tindouf and Bechar is slated for January 2026. This infrastructure project is considered a significant developmental achievement and will be commemorated with a national celebration.

Gara Djebilet represents a major step forward for Algeria’s mining sector and its broader economic ambitions. The project has been the subject of considerable planning and investment, and its successful launch is expected to have a positive impact on job creation and regional development.

The Council of Ministers emphasized the importance of adhering to the established timeline and ensuring the efficient and sustainable operation of the mine. Authorities are committed to implementing best practices in environmental management and community engagement throughout the project’s lifecycle.

The Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit is one of the largest in the world, holding the potential to significantly boost Algeria’s mineral production and export capacity. The government anticipates that the mine will play a key role in driving economic growth and improving the country’s trade balance in the years to come.
