The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reportedly thwarted a fierce attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of Babnusa, located in West Kordofan state, earlier today. Military sources confirmed the incident, stating that the army successfully defended the city after a sustained assault.
According to reports, the 22nd Infantry Division stationed in Babnusa managed to repel the RSF offensive, which lasted for over four hours. The attacking forces reportedly employed heavy and light weaponry, including drones, during their attempt to seize the city.
The SAF claims to have inflicted significant casualties and material losses on the attacking RSF unit. This latest clash follows renewed fighting between the army and the RSF in Babnusa, with previous skirmishes involving heavy artillery, drones, and armored vehicles.
Local sources indicate that the army has been air-dropping supplies to reinforce its troops within Babnusa, which has been under siege by the RSF since January 2024. The ongoing battles in Babnusa are part of a wider conflict engulfing the Kordofan region, with intense fighting reported across North, West, and South Kordofan states.
Babnusa has been under RSF siege for over a year, forcing the army to rely on aerial resupply efforts. The two sides continue to battle for control of the strategic city. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted in mid-April 2023, has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis. The United Nations and local authorities estimate that over 20,000 people have been killed, and approximately 15 million have been displaced or have sought refuge in neighboring countries. The situation remains tense, with no immediate resolution in sight. The conflict’s impact on civilians is particularly concerning.
