Greece to Supply Ukraine with US Gas Starting in December

Athens, Greece – Ukraine has secured an agreement with Greece to bolster its natural gas supplies ahead of the upcoming winter season. The agreement was announced following a meeting in Athens between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Under the terms of the deal, Greek company DEPA Commercial will supply Ukrainian company Naftogaz with US natural gas from December through March. This strategic partnership aims to ensure a stable energy supply for Ukraine during the colder months.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, “Ukraine gains direct access to diverse and reliable energy sources, while Greece now becomes a hub for supplying Central and Eastern Europe with American liquefied natural gas (LNG).”

The framework agreement between DEPA and Naftogaz anticipates the transport of US-sourced LNG via “Vertical Corridor”, a route jointly provided by gas transmission system operators in Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, according to statements from both companies.

This agreement is a significant step towards strengthening energy security in the region and diversifying supply routes for Ukraine. The increased reliance on US LNG also underscores the shifting dynamics of the global energy market.
