Algiers – National team coach Vladimir Petkovic has begun preparations for the preliminary squad set to participate in the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations. Indications strongly suggest the squad will be composed almost entirely of players who are professionals based outside of Algeria.
The Swiss coach’s decision reflects his pursuit of peak readiness, especially given the tournament’s sensitive timing, requiring players with high competitive experience and a strong playing rhythm.
Goalkeeping Exception: Local Talent in the Mix
Despite Petkovic’s preference for a squad dominated by professionals from Europe and the Gulf, the goalkeeping position appears to be the exception. The coach is considering inviting two goalkeepers from the domestic league to join Luca Zidane. This consideration stems from limited options in Europe and the scarcity of Algerian goalkeepers playing regularly at a high level abroad.
The technical staff believes that certain local goalkeepers possess the technical and physical capabilities to serve as substitutes or the third-choice goalkeeper in the final squad.
Petkovic May Delegate Local Players to Bouguera for Arab Cup
The Swiss coach’s decision is not solely technical. It also aligns with comprehensive coordination between him, local team coach Madjid Bouguera, and FAF President Walid Sadi. The current idea is to leave the domestic league players under Bouguera’s direction for the Arab Cup Qatar 2025, especially since the tournament takes place around the same time as CAN preparations.
The FAF aims to avoid burdening local players or diverting their focus between two national teams. They also believe that Bouguera needs a full complement of players to advance far in the Arab competition.
A Recurring Scenario: Historical Trend Away from Local Players
Petkovic’s approach is not unprecedented for the national team. Former coaches, including Gourcuff, Leekens, Rajevac, and even Belmadi early in his tenure, largely relied on professional players, with limited exceptions in certain positions. Historically, the national team has faced difficulties integrating players from the domestic league into major tournaments. Furthermore, Petkovic is reportedly monitoring Youcef Atal’s progress as he recovers from injury, hoping for his return to full fitness soon. Atal’s potential inclusion would bolster the team’s defensive options.
