Gara Djebilet Iron Ore Mine to Begin Operations in Early 2026

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has directed that the exploitation of iron ore from the Gara Djebilet mine will commence in the first quarter of 2026. This marks a significant milestone as the first instance of local utilization of iron ore extracted from the mine since Algeria’s independence.

The President emphasized the strategic importance of the project and instructed officials to intensify efforts to finalize the remaining stages. This follows the approval for the establishment of new processing plants in the wilayas of Tindouf, Bechar, and Naama, dedicated to the treatment of the iron ore extracted from Gara Djebilet.

President Tebboune further instructed that the first shipment of iron ore should arrive at the Tosyali complex in Oran via railway during 2026. This initiative is aimed at reducing Algeria’s reliance on iron ore imports and gradually achieving self-sufficiency in this crucial resource.

The Gara Djebilet project is a cornerstone of Algeria’s strategy to diversify its economy and develop its mining sector. By processing iron ore domestically, Algeria aims to create new jobs, boost industrial output, and strengthen its position as a regional economic power.

The commencement of operations at Gara Djebilet represents a pivotal moment for Algeria’s industrial development and its pursuit of economic independence. The project is expected to significantly impact the country’s economy and contribute to its long-term growth.
