The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has lauded Algeria’s significant strides in advancing its agricultural sector. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Saturday, the FAO Director-General commended Algeria’s ongoing efforts.
During a meeting between Minister Yassine Oualid and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu on the sidelines of the World Food Forum in Rome, Mr. Qu expressed the organization’s willingness to continue providing the necessary technical and institutional support to help Algeria achieve its development goals.
The discussions focused on deepening bilateral cooperation and developing joint programs aimed at achieving food security and sustainable agricultural development. Several strategic axes for modernizing and developing the Algerian agricultural sector were also explored.
Minister Oualid emphasized Algeria’s commitment to strengthening technology transfer programs and technical expertise to improve agricultural productivity and promote modern, sustainable farming practices. Both parties highlighted the importance of developing innovative agricultural models suitable for arid and semi-arid regions, with the aim of positioning Algeria as a leading regional hub for climate-smart desert agriculture.
The Minister outlined the government’s efforts to modernize the agricultural storage and logistics system and develop value chains to reduce food waste and enhance national food security. A significant portion of the discussions was dedicated to Algeria’s Green Dam project, which enjoys the support of the FAO and the Green Climate Fund.
Furthermore, the two sides explored mechanisms to accelerate reforestation, combat desertification, and address land degradation, reflecting Algeria’s commitment to tackling climate challenges and restoring vegetation cover. The Minister expressed his appreciation for the FAO’s continued support to Algeria, reaffirming the country’s determination to further strengthen this strategic partnership for the benefit of food security and sustainable rural development.
The meeting underscores Algeria’s active participation in the World Food Forum and its commitment to developing effective international partnerships to achieve sustainable agricultural transformation and build a resilient food system capable of addressing the challenges of climate change, the statement added.
