Tlemcen: Smuggling Attempts Thwarted, Weapons and Drugs Seized

Tlemcen, Algeria – Customs officials in Tlemcen have successfully intercepted two separate smuggling attempts, seizing illegal firearms and a large quantity of psychotropic drugs. The operations highlight the ongoing efforts to combat illicit trafficking through the region.

At Tlemcen’s Messali El Hadj Airport, inspectors from the main passenger control division uncovered five antique, locally-made automatic pistols concealed within the personal luggage of a traveler. The discovery was made during routine processing of a flight arriving from Lille, France. The smuggled weapons were confiscated, and the individual involved has been handed over to judicial authorities for further legal action.

This operation underscores the vigilance and dedication of customs personnel in safeguarding national and international cultural heritage from smuggling activities. Their efforts are crucial in preventing the illegal movement of sensitive items across borders.

In a separate operation, officers from the multi-task force in Sebdou, also under the Tlemcen Customs Inspectorate, seized 4,175 psychotropic tablets. The drugs, identified as foreign-made Pregabalin 300mg, were discovered inside a black bag found hidden along a roadside. The bag aroused the suspicion of officers during a patrol within their area of responsibility.

The seized tablets have been confiscated, and relevant judicial authorities have been notified to initiate an investigation and implement the necessary legal procedures. DZWatch will continue to follow this developing story.
