Algeria is undergoing a profound strategic shift in its energy system, transitioning from a hydrocarbon-dependent model to a diversified energy economy based on renewable resources and clean technologies. This transformation is part of a broader national vision, spearheaded by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, extending to 2050. It aims to build a resilient, innovative, and sustainable energy economy that adapts to global changes and lays the foundation for a new industrial resurgence.
Experts agree that this vision represents the most significant restructuring of the energy sector since independence, through the institutional separation of the hydrocarbon and renewable energy sectors. This grants each sector its own executive and strategic identity, while reinforcing the role of the Ministry of Renewable Energy as a specialized national hub for developing clean energy projects.
Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, emphasized that proactive planning and close coordination between various sector bodies are the cornerstones of ensuring a secure and reliable energy supply for citizens and public institutions. He lauded the positive results achieved during the summer of 2025, thanks to close cooperation between the ministry and Sonelgaz.
Experts highlight that the commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy to 27 percent of electricity production by 2030 reflects a clear political will by the Algerian government to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance the sustainability of national resources, amid accelerating global shifts towards clean energy. This path has been accompanied by the launch of strategic projects in the field of green hydrogen, which is expected to make Algeria a pivotal player in the new global energy market, especially with increasing international interest in alternative energies.
Minister Adjal stressed that Algeria’s energy transition is closely linked to the mining sector, as a fundamental industrial pillar for providing the raw materials necessary for renewable energy technologies. He also called for continued development of networks and improved efficiency in production, transmission, and distribution, with particular emphasis on renewable energy projects.
