BOUGHEZOUL, Algeria – In a move signaling a commitment to national security and technological independence, Algeria is significantly strengthening its space communications infrastructure. The foundation stone for a new, strategically vital space communications center was laid in Boughezoul, Médéa Province, marking a pivotal step in safeguarding the nation’s digital sovereignty.
As reliance on digital infrastructure grows, so too does the vulnerability to cyber threats and disruptions. Algeria recognizes the need to secure its communication channels, viewing it as essential for national security and strategic readiness. The new facility represents more than just a technological upgrade; it embodies a profound shift in the nation’s approach to digital security.
The project aims to enhance Algeria’s resilience against potential disruptions, cyber-attacks, and attempts to target sensitive networks. This initiative sends a clear message: Algeria is building a robust space communications system designed for operational redundancy and strategic resilience, ensuring the continuity of vital services regardless of external pressures or unforeseen scenarios.
The Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, officially inaugurated the construction of the dual space communications center, which is under the purview of the Algerian Space Telecommunications Company (ATS). This project is a critical component of the state’s broader strategy to bolster the security of its digital networks and fortify national infrastructure in the face of rapid technological advancements in space communication.
Youcef Bouayad, Head of the Commercial Department at ATS, emphasized the strategic importance of the Boughezoul facility. He stated that it serves as a strategic asset, enhancing the nation’s preparedness for any emergency. The new center will function as a backup to the existing Al Akhdaria center in Bouira Province, utilizing a redundancy system to guarantee the uninterrupted provision of essential space-based services, even in extraordinary circumstances.
