Museveni Urges Ugandan Youth to Shun European Football

Mbale, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni has called on Ugandan youth to abandon their preoccupation with European football, urging them to focus on more productive activities that contribute to national and regional development.

Speaking at a press conference at his residence in Mbale following an election campaign tour in the Bukedi sub-region, Museveni criticized what he described as the widespread obsession of unemployed youth with sports betting, asserting that these practices often lead to ‘disastrous’ outcomes.

“It is astonishing to see young people, intellectuals, and politicians wasting their time on things that are not related to their future,” the President stated. He emphasized the need for young Ugandans to channel their energies into endeavors that build the nation.

Museveni also touched upon the topic of political unity, referencing the European experience. He pointed out that Germany and Italy were only able to build strong economies after achieving political unification.

“The modern economy cannot grow without a large market,” he said, advocating for accelerated efforts to establish a political federation in East Africa. He believes such a federation would provide the region with the necessary defense, technological, and economic capabilities to compete globally.

In a somewhat satirical tone, Museveni suggested that a united East Africa could “send a satellite into space and question the Americans about their presence there, as space is the common property of humanity.”

These remarks come as President Museveni prepares for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for January 15, 2026. He is seeking to extend his rule, which has already spanned over four decades, and faces competition from seven other candidates. The election is expected to be closely contested.
