Brussels – The European Union has strongly condemned any potential move by Israeli authorities to annex parts of the West Bank, stating such action would constitute a clear violation of international law and severely undermine the prospects for a two-state solution.
In a statement released Wednesday, the EU reiterated its firm commitment to a negotiated resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on international law and relevant UN resolutions. The Union emphasized that unilateral actions, such as annexation, are detrimental to peace efforts and would have serious consequences for the region.
“The EU does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the territories occupied since 1967, including the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza. Any attempt to alter the status of these territories would be a breach of international law and would not be recognized by the EU member states,” the statement read.
The potential annexation raises concerns about the future of the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination. The EU called on both Israel and the Palestinians to refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions and to re-engage in meaningful negotiations towards a lasting and comprehensive peace agreement.
The EU’s position reflects a long-standing commitment to a two-state solution, where a sovereign and independent Palestinian state exists alongside a secure Israel, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states. The Union has consistently provided financial and political support to the Palestinian Authority and has worked with international partners to promote peace and stability in the region.
The statement concludes with a renewed call for dialogue and a rejection of any unilateral actions that could jeopardize the prospects for a just and lasting peace.
