Gaza continues to face a dire humanitarian situation despite the recent ceasefire, according to Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). In an interview, Lazzarini emphasized that the current level of aid entering the Gaza Strip remains insufficient and heavily restricted, calling for the immediate opening of border crossings to facilitate the entry of essential supplies.
Lazzarini highlighted the immense suffering endured by Gazan residents over the past two years, marked by intense conflict, relentless bombardments, and widespread displacement. He noted that since the cessation of hostilities, adequate resources have failed to reach the population, with existing aid deliveries facing significant limitations. He stressed that over 96% of Gaza’s population is now entirely dependent on international aid for survival.
The UNRWA chief further elaborated on the numerous challenges confronting Gaza, citing the inadequate volume of international aid reaching the territory. While acknowledging the private sector’s role in supplying some goods, he pointed out that the majority of Gazans are unable to afford basic necessities due to soaring prices. He warned that the approaching winter season will exacerbate the already precarious situation, necessitating the urgent provision of essential items such as mattresses, tents, warm clothing, and protection against the elements.
“Opening the crossings is paramount to delivering much-needed assistance to the people of Gaza,” Lazzarini stated. He revealed that UNRWA currently has thousands of trucks laden with supplies awaiting entry permits, which, if granted, would significantly alleviate the suffering of Gazan civilians and shield them from the harsh winter conditions.
Lazzarini affirmed that UNRWA, with its 12,000 staff members in Gaza, remains operational and committed to addressing food security challenges in the region. The agency continues to provide educational programs for thousands of children returning to school and delivers approximately 14,000 medical consultations daily.
In a final appeal, Lazzarini urged member states of UNRWA’s Advisory Commission to secure the agency’s operational space and capabilities, enabling it to effectively deliver services to the Gazan population and promote stability in the region.
