Algeria, Germany Explore Enhanced Energy Partnership, Green Hydrogen

Algeria and Germany are exploring ways to strengthen their partnership in the energy sector, with a particular focus on green hydrogen development. Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, met with Tobias Gotthardt, State Secretary of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, and his accompanying delegation, at the ministry headquarters on Wednesday.

The meeting, which was attended by the Secretary of State in charge of Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, and several ministry officials, addressed bilateral Algerian-German relations in the fields of hydrocarbons, the oil and gas industry, engineering, energy infrastructure, and equipment manufacturing, including desalination technology. Discussions also covered the exploitation and processing of mineral resources. The progress of the strategic energy partnership between the two countries, which has been in place for several years, was also reviewed.

Both parties expressed satisfaction with the progress made in bilateral cooperation for the development of green hydrogen, particularly through the SoutH2 Corridor project and the Algerian-European Hydrogen Alliance (ALTEH2A). They also welcomed the results of the recent international meeting in Berlin, which focused on monitoring the progress of these projects with the participation of a high-level Algerian delegation.

The two sides explored opportunities to enhance cooperation through mutually beneficial partnership projects, including natural gas marketing, the adoption of low-carbon technologies in the oil and gas industry, the development, transportation, and marketing of green hydrogen, and the manufacturing of related equipment such as electrolyzers. Expanding cooperation in the exploitation and processing of mineral resources, particularly phosphates and the production of phosphate fertilizers, as well as training, knowledge transfer, and capacity building were also discussed.

During the talks, Minister Arkab emphasized the strategic priority of developing a hydrogen economy in Algeria, noting that the state has completed the legal and institutional framework regulating this activity, which will attract more investment into hydrogen and decarbonization value chains. He also stressed the importance of cooperation with Germany in modern technologies and advanced industrial experiments to be deployed in joint projects that serve both parties.

The meeting also touched on the prospects for cooperation between Algerian and German companies in the fields of hydrocarbons and mining, emphasizing the importance of exchanging experiences, transferring technology, providing specialized training, and reducing the carbon footprint, in line with the national vision for energy transition and global trends. The focus remains on building a sustainable and mutually beneficial energy partnership.
