Algiers – Algeria and Germany are forging ahead with strengthened cooperation in the energy and mining sectors. A recent meeting between the Algerian Minister of State in charge of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and the State Secretary of the Bavarian Ministry of Economy, Regional Development and Energy, Tobias Gotthardt, signals a renewed commitment to this strategic partnership.
The discussions, attended by key industry figures, focused on expanding bilateral relations in hydrocarbons, oil and gas industries, related infrastructure, and equipment. Specific attention was given to projects involving seawater desalination and the exploitation and processing of mineral resources.
Both sides reviewed the progress of their long-standing strategic partnership, evaluating achievements and identifying areas for future development. The meeting highlighted hydrogen as a key area for enhanced collaboration. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project and the Algerian-European Hydrogen Alliance (ALTEH2A).
The recent international meeting in Berlin, which showcased the advancement of these projects with significant Algerian technical participation, was also lauded. The talks explored opportunities for further cooperation, including natural gas marketing projects, wider adoption of low-carbon technologies in the oil and gas sectors, and the transfer, development, and marketing of green hydrogen and related industries.
Discussions also encompassed mineral resource projects, particularly phosphate exploitation, processing, and the production of phosphate fertilizers, as well as training, skills development, and knowledge transfer. Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s commitment to hydrogen as a cornerstone of its future energy strategy, noting that work is underway to complete the legislative and regulatory framework for this activity. The goal is to create a conducive environment for investment and innovation in the hydrogen sector.
This enhanced partnership is expected to drive economic growth and contribute to a sustainable energy future for both Algeria and Germany.
