Police Seize Over Half a Ton of Bananas in El Oued

El Oued, Algeria – November 19, 2025 – Authorities in El Oued have seized a significant quantity of bananas being sold illegally in the local market. The operation, conducted by the Wilaya Public Security Service, resulted in the confiscation of 530 kilograms of the fruit.

According to a statement released by the security services, the seizure occurred during routine market inspections targeting vegetable and fruit vendors. Officers discovered two merchants selling bananas at prices exceeding the legally mandated limit.

The first merchant was found to be in possession of 168 kilograms of bananas, while the second had 362 kilograms. In total, the combined weight of the seized fruit amounted to 530 kilograms, equivalent to over half a ton.

The statement further indicated that the bananas were being displayed for sale on the pavement, and neither of the merchants possessed the necessary commercial licenses required to conduct such business. Moreover, the fruit was being sold at prices exceeding 400 Algerian Dinars, the legally stipulated price ceiling for bananas.

Law enforcement officials, in coordination with trade authorities, are now taking appropriate legal measures against the individuals involved. The operation underscores the commitment of local authorities to enforcing price controls and combating illegal trading practices within the region.
