Algeria Highlights Trans-Saharan Fiber Optic Project at Global Forum

Baku, Azerbaijan – Algeria’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, underscored the strategic importance of the Trans-Saharan fiber optic project during his address at the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25) in Baku. Minister Zerrouki outlined Algeria’s ambitious vision for building a comprehensive and secure digital ecosystem, positioning connectivity as a cornerstone for development and digital sovereignty.

The Minister detailed several key strategic projects underway in Algeria, including the nationwide expansion of the fiber optic network, aiming for complete coverage by 2027. This initiative includes connecting thousands of villages and remote areas as part of a universal service framework, ensuring equitable access to the internet for all citizens. Furthermore, Algeria is preparing for the commercial launch of 5G services before the end of 2025.

Minister Zerrouki emphasized Algeria’s commitment to leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance its national digital infrastructure. He also highlighted the country’s focus on strengthening cybersecurity capabilities and providing specialized training to ensure a skilled national workforce.

A key aspect of Algeria’s digital strategy is the Trans-Saharan fiber optic backbone project, which Minister Zerrouki emphasized as a crucial element for promoting digital integration across Africa and supporting technological advancements in developing nations. He urged the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to continue supporting developing countries through sustainable funding mechanisms, the adoption of open technical standards, and expanded capacity-building programs to facilitate affordable and inclusive connectivity for all.

Minister Zerrouki concluded by reiterating Algeria’s unwavering commitment to supporting digital transformation and leveraging connectivity as a tool for achieving shared development and prosperity. On the sidelines of the conference, Minister Zerrouki held bilateral meetings with several international officials, including representatives from India, China, Iran, South Korea, Uganda, and Japan, to discuss opportunities for collaboration and exchange perspectives on telecommunications development.
