Childhood Cancer Cases in Algeria Reach 2000 Annually

Algiers, October 21, 2025 – Algeria is diagnosing between 1,500 and 2,000 new cases of cancer in children each year, according to the head of the National Committee for the Prevention and Control of Cancer, Dr. Ali Boungar.

Dr. Boungar made the announcement following the signing of a partnership agreement between the National Social Security Fund for Salaried Workers (CNAS) and a number of public and private hospitals. The agreement aims to improve care and support for children battling cancer across the country.

“The CNAS will now cover transportation and accommodation costs for children with cancer and their families,” Dr. Boungar stated in a press briefing. This initiative seeks to alleviate the financial burden on families who often face significant challenges in accessing specialized treatment for their children.

Dr. Boungar praised the partnership between CNAS and specialized radiotherapy centers, describing it as a “valuable initiative.” He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to provide comprehensive care and improve outcomes for young cancer patients.

DZWatch will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as they become available. The rise in childhood cancer cases underscores the need for increased awareness, early detection, and improved access to quality treatment for all children in Algeria.
