Palestinian Writer: “Algeria is a Red Line”

A prominent Palestinian writer has strongly defended Algeria against recent criticism following its vote at the UN Security Council regarding the resolution on the Gaza ceasefire. The writer, Amer Abu Shabab, described the attacks as stemming from ignorance and subservience to partisan interests, arguing that critics fail to appreciate Algeria’s principled stance and sense of national responsibility.

In an article published in the Palestinian newspaper Al-Raya, titled “From Palestine… Algeria is a Red Line,” Abu Shabab emphasized that Algeria approached the issue with wisdom and political realism. He contrasted this with what he termed the empty rhetoric of those engaged in political posturing, while Algerian diplomacy continues to set a high standard, recognized by both allies and adversaries for decades.

Abu Shabab dismissed the criticism directed at the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as “naive and disingenuous.” He recalled Algeria’s historical role in championing Palestinian rights on the international stage, notably its instrumental role in facilitating Yasser Arafat’s address to the United Nations. The writer explained that Algeria’s position during the Security Council vote was not a spontaneous reaction but stemmed from a balanced perspective, acknowledging the complexities of the situation. He stressed Algeria’s responsibility in representing the collective Arab voice, prioritizing a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza, expediting humanitarian aid, preventing displacement, and advocating for the complete withdrawal of occupying forces. He also underscored the importance of the two-state solution as a political pathway to ending the Palestinian plight.

Abu Shabab pointed out that those criticizing Algeria overlooked the fact that the resolution was based on a plan initially proposed by former US President Donald Trump and accepted by Palestinian factions after years of conflict. He added that Algeria played a crucial role in introducing key amendments to the resolution to ensure its alignment with previous UN resolutions and the New York Declaration on safeguarding the two-state solution.
