Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Zohir Bouamama, has called on national media outlets to embrace a professional approach grounded in accuracy and objectivity. Speaking in Algiers on Thursday, the Minister emphasized that the media landscape can no longer afford improvisation or haphazard information dissemination.
During a workshop organized by the Algerian Academy of Science and Technology at the Ministry of Communication, titled “The Reality of Scientific Journalism in Algeria,” Minister Bouamama stressed the need to cultivate a media culture based on in-depth analysis and reliable information reporting. This, he stated, should reflect the efforts made by the Algerian state across various sectors and bolster its presence on the international stage.
The Minister asserted that strengthening media institutions with well-trained and highly skilled journalists has become essential to confront what he termed “hostile media campaigns.” He advocated for building a cohesive media narrative based on facts and an understanding of global dynamics. Minister Bouamama underscored the importance of specialized journalism, viewing it as a value-added component capable of making a difference through the production of in-depth and sustainable content on technology, artificial intelligence, medicine, the environment, modern economics, and other vital fields.
The rapid pace of information flow requires professionals capable of sifting through content and transforming it into trustworthy media material, the Minister noted. He added that “the awareness of Algerians will remain the first line of defense in thwarting attempts at distortion and misinformation targeting the country.” He reiterated that training is the cornerstone of media sector reform, a focus of the Ministry’s programs aimed at raising the level of professionalism to keep pace with global developments in content creation.
The workshop’s opening ceremony was attended by the Advisor to the President of the Republic in charge of Education, Higher Education, Vocational Training, and Culture, Nasr Eddine Ben Tifour, along with representatives from various national bodies.
