Algeria’s National Gene Bank is slated to open by 2026, according to an announcement made by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Mehdi Oualid. The Minister addressed the issue during a session at the People’s National Assembly, responding to questions regarding agricultural policy.
Minister Oualid emphasized the importance of hybrid seeds, stating that they have “demonstrated a high capacity to increase agricultural production and improve the quality of products.” He further noted that leveraging hybrid seed technology is a “strategic choice” for the country’s agricultural future.
The Ministry places significant emphasis on the use of both local and hybrid seeds to achieve national food security, preserve the national plant genetic heritage, and ensure the sustainability of agricultural production. Algeria is one of the few countries globally that prohibits the use and marketing of genetically modified seeds (those whose DNA has been altered in a laboratory setting).
The Minister clarified that the use of first-generation hybrid seeds is subject to strict measures and controls implemented by the National Center for Seed and Seedling Control and Certification.
Forestry Sector Employment Boost
In related news, Minister Oualid also highlighted the recruitment of 3,245 contract workers across various provincial forestry departments. These positions are aimed at preserving forest assets, rehabilitating forest areas, and enhancing overall forest protection. Specifically, 2,158 contract workers have been employed for fire prevention and control, while 1,087 are dedicated to forest maintenance.
The Minister assured that these seasonal workers receive all the allowances and benefits granted to employees with permanent contracts. Furthermore, they receive work certificates and professional experience documentation that will be considered when participating in future recruitment competitions. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to both agricultural advancement and environmental stewardship.
