Algeria Champions African Voice at G20 Consultations

Johannesburg, South Africa – Algeria played a prominent role in pre-summit consultations held in Johannesburg ahead of the G20 summit, advocating for African priorities and reforms to global governance. The high-level meeting, chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, took place on November 21, 2025, on the eve of the G20 summit scheduled for November 22-23.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrib, representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, attended the meeting, which brought together heads of state and government from African nations invited to participate in the summit, along with officials from regional organizations. Discussions focused on Africa’s expectations for the G20 summit and key priority issues identified by South Africa during its presidency of the group.

Top of the agenda were several strategic issues, including: finding sustainable solutions to the debt crisis burdening many African countries; ensuring fair financing for development projects and enhancing African countries’ access to financial resources; promoting equitable exploitation of natural resources and developing ways to maximize their value for the benefit of the continent’s people; and pushing for in-depth reforms in the global governance system, particularly within international financial institutions and the United Nations system.

Participants emphasized that the African continent continues to suffer from under-representation in international institutions and the marginalization of its voice in critical decision-making processes, including those related to the future of global security and development.

The meeting also underscored the importance of strengthening joint African action and leveraging the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20 to unify efforts and amplify the continent’s voice within the world’s largest economic forums. This aims to safeguard Africa’s interests and solidify its position on the international stage. Algeria’s participation reflects its steadfast commitment to defending African issues and supporting efforts to build a more just and balanced international order. Algeria is committed to being a strong voice for the continent.
