Ukraine Considers US Peace Plan Amidst Deadline Pressure

Kyiv is actively reviewing a proposed American plan to end the conflict in Ukraine, engaging with European partners to assess its viability. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated that he discussed the US initiative in a joint phone call with several European counterparts.

The call included the foreign ministers of France, Britain, Poland, and Finland, as well as the EU’s foreign policy coordinator, Kaja Kallas, and representatives from Italy and Germany. Sybiha emphasized the timeliness of the discussion and its role in defining future steps.

According to Minister Sybiha, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was briefed on the outcomes of these discussions, leading to the determination of a ‘logic for our next steps.’ He elaborated that the talks focused on analyzing the elements of the US peace proposals and collaborative efforts to establish a viable path towards a just peace.

‘We discussed in detail elements of the peace proposals presented by the United States and our joint work to pave a viable path towards a just peace,’ Sybiha stated.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has reportedly given Kyiv until next Thursday to respond to the proposed plan. Details of the plan remain largely undisclosed, but it is understood to involve compromises from both sides to achieve a cessation of hostilities.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper affirmed on social media that the discussions reiterated support for a ‘just and lasting peace’ in Ukraine. ‘We must ensure a comprehensive ceasefire and make way for serious negotiations, and Ukraine must decide its future, and we will work with it, the United States and the European Union for peace,’ Cooper wrote.

The pressure from Washington to accept the settlement plan is significant, with President Trump pushing for a resolution to the ongoing conflict. The coming days will be crucial as Ukraine weighs its options and considers the implications of the proposed US initiative. The focus remains on achieving a lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
