President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has reaffirmed that self-sufficiency and food security are the top priorities for Algeria. This declaration was delivered on his behalf by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrib during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Prime Minister Ghrib read President Tebboune’s address during the summit’s second session, themed ‘A Resilient World – The G20 Contribution: Reducing Disaster Risks.’ The President highlighted the significant transformations Algeria has undergone in its food systems in recent years, particularly through the development of agriculture in the southern regions.
President Tebboune also emphasized Algeria’s partnerships with allied and friendly nations. He urged G20 members to forge partnerships with African countries to enhance agricultural and livestock production. He believes such collaborations are crucial in combating hunger and addressing the food crises plaguing numerous African nations.
The President cited Algeria’s collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide food aid to affected countries as an example. He also referenced the cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the agricultural sector, particularly in the Sahel region of Africa, noting that the transfer of expertise has led to considerable advancements in agricultural systems.
President Tebboune also addressed the challenges of energy transition in Africa. He pointed out that while Africa accounts for 18% of the world’s population, its energy consumption is less than 6% of the global total, with electricity access not exceeding 45%.
The President emphasized the importance of tackling climate change and reducing emissions, particularly within the energy sector. He suggested that this can be achieved through national policies, programs, and plans focused on developing clean energy sources and promoting energy efficiency to reduce consumption and emissions.
President Tebboune stated that a gradual shift away from fossil fuels requires creating favorable conditions, including facilitating financial support for developing countries and establishing international frameworks to support the transfer of technology for developing future energy sources. He stressed the need for collaborative action to achieve these goals. Algeria remains committed to supporting African nations in achieving food security and sustainable energy solutions.
