Blida, Algeria – The Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmahdi, today inaugurated the third National Forum on Female Religious Guidance at the Al-Kawthar Mosque in Blida. The forum, themed “Strengthening the Role of Female Religious Guidance and Developing its Mechanisms,” underscores the growing importance of women in religious and social spheres.
In his opening address, Minister Belmahdi emphasized that female religious guidance is not merely a devotional activity but a crucial element in safeguarding national unity and preserving social bonds. He recalled Algeria’s resilience during the difficult period of the 1990s, attributing it to the strength and cohesion of Algerian society.
Belmahdi highlighted Algeria as one of the first Islamic countries to establish the position of female religious guide, a strategic decision reflecting a progressive national vision for involving women in religious, educational, and social work. He noted the continuous increase in the number of female religious guides across the country, now totaling 1,850 spread across various provinces, demonstrating the expanding reach and growing effectiveness of this initiative.
The Minister praised the ability of female religious guides to support vulnerable groups, promote reassurance, and guide families in addressing their daily challenges. He affirmed that their role has become central to the religious and social system. Belmahdi also addressed the dangers of domestic violence, particularly against women and children, stressing that tackling this phenomenon requires collaboration between religious, social, and institutional efforts.
Furthermore, Belmahdi cautioned against attempts to target young people through drug promotion, considering them serious threats aimed at destabilizing society. He commended the efforts of the security services and the People’s National Army in protecting the country and seizing significant quantities of these narcotics. The minister concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to supporting and empowering female religious guides in their vital role in Algerian society.
