The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has affirmed its readiness to bolster cooperation with Algeria in the fields of sustainable industries, energy transition, innovation, and green technology. This commitment was conveyed during discussions between the Director-General of UNIDO, Gerd Müller, and the Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 21st UNIDO General Conference held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Müller emphasized UNIDO’s strong willingness to develop collaborative relationships with Algeria across various areas of mutual interest. He also lauded Algeria’s active participation in the international event.
Müller recalled the positive outcomes of his visit to Algeria in June 2024, which he described as a significant step towards strengthening cooperation between the two parties. During that visit, he met with senior Algerian officials, including President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, establishing a foundation for new levels of partnership in industrial development, youth inclusion, and support for emerging enterprises.
According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, the discussions, which were also attended by Algeria’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to UNIDO, Larbi Latroche, and Algeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Cherif Oualid, provided an opportunity to review the excellent relations between Algeria and UNIDO. They also explored ways to enhance cooperation in the areas of hydrocarbons, mining, and energy industries, as well as to explore new avenues for joint work in industrial technology, innovation, and sustainable development.
Minister Arkab expressed Algeria’s desire for greater technical support from UNIDO in developing regulatory frameworks, enhancing industrial quality, promoting investment, and supporting programs aimed at creating job opportunities for young people. He welcomed UNIDO’s proposal to oversee the General Secretariat of the “SoutH2 Corridor” project, recognizing its strategic importance in supporting the global energy transition and promoting South-North partnerships. The importance of UNIDO’s contribution to supporting this new energy direction at both the technical and organizational levels was emphasized.
The meeting also touched upon Algeria’s role in promoting a circular economy and the ongoing collaboration to achieve sustainable industrial growth.
