The United Nations Security Council convened today for its monthly open briefing on the situation in the Middle East, with a particular focus on the Palestinian issue. The briefing was led by Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.
Following the open session, the Council is scheduled to hold closed-door consultations to discuss the information presented and to consider potential next steps or recommendations. This meeting comes amidst escalating tensions and reports of violations of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
Reports from the ground indicate continued Israeli military activity. According to Palestinian news sources, at least two individuals were killed and several others injured in separate incidents earlier today. One incident involved shelling east of Gaza City, specifically in the Al-Shaaf area of the Al-Tuffah neighborhood, while the other occurred east of Khan Yunis in Bani Suheila. Reports suggest the use of artillery and drone strikes in these areas. There are also claims of explosive devices being detonated in the region.
DZWatch has learned that the situation in Rafah, particularly the northeastern part of the city, remains volatile, with reports of ongoing raids, tank fire, and helicopter activity.
Since the ceasefire agreement on October 11th, the reported death toll has risen to approximately 340, with over 871 injured. Additionally, the bodies of 574 individuals have been recovered from the affected areas. The Security Council’s deliberations are therefore viewed as critical in addressing the deteriorating security situation and exploring avenues for de-escalation and a lasting peace. The international community is watching closely to see what measures the Council will propose to resolve this ongoing conflict and ensure the safety and security of civilians.
