India and Japan Pledge to Deepen Strategic Partnership

Johannesburg, South Africa – India and Japan have agreed to expand cooperation across a range of critical sectors, including security, economics, and investment. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg.

Prime Minister Takaichi, in her discussions with Prime Minister Modi, emphasized the importance of bilateral collaboration in emerging and vital technologies, specifically highlighting artificial intelligence and semiconductors. She also stressed the significance of strengthening economic security ties between the two nations.

Both leaders affirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The meeting marks the first official engagement between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi, who assumed office last month.

In addition to the meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Prime Minister Takaichi held separate discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who presided over the G20 summit. These meetings underscore Japan’s commitment to engaging with key global partners on pressing international issues.

The strengthened partnership between India and Japan signals a deepening of strategic ties between the two Asian powers, with potentially significant implications for regional stability and economic growth.
