Algiers, Algeria – Supporters of MC Alger who were detained in Rwanda following their team’s match against Al-Hilal of Sudan in the CAF Champions League have been released and are expected to return home soon, DZWatch has learned.
The club’s management issued a statement late yesterday, expressing relief and gratitude to the Algerian Embassy in Rwanda for their assistance in resolving the situation. The statement specifically thanked the Algerian Ambassador to Rwanda, Mohammed Mellah, for his direct involvement and efforts to secure the release of the fans.
“We extend our sincere thanks to the Algerian Embassy in Rwanda, and especially to Ambassador Mohammed Mellah, for his cooperation and communication from day one, and for his efforts to solve the problem and his visit to the location, where he sought in every way to help our supporters return to their homeland,” the club’s statement read.
MC Alger’s management also expressed their appreciation to the Ministry of Sports for its collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in expediting the release of the supporters. According to the club, these ministries worked together to ensure the swift return of the detained fans to their families. Four supporters have already returned home.
DZWatch understands that MC Alger closely monitored the situation, maintaining constant communication with the Algerian Ambassador, who personally visited the locations where the supporters were being held. The club has yet to release details on the reason for the detention.
This news will come as a great relief to the families and friends of the supporters who were stranded in Rwanda. The incident highlights the importance of consular assistance for Algerian citizens traveling abroad to support their teams.
