Algiers, November 25, 2025 – The Algerian government is reinforcing its commitment to protecting women from violence with the introduction of new legal provisions. Minister of Justice, Lotfi Boujemaa, alongside the Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs, Souria Mouloudji, presided over a ceremony commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, held at the National Housing Bank in Bab Ezzouar.
Minister Boujemaa emphasized the importance of the day as an opportunity to highlight the efforts of various public authorities in Algeria to combat violence against women. He reiterated the state’s commitment to safeguarding the freedoms of all citizens, particularly women, and adapting its legal framework to align with international conventions.
“The constitution enshrines these rights in several provisions, notably Article 44, which stipulates the state’s responsibility to protect women from all forms of violence in all places and circumstances, whether in the public sphere or in professional and private settings,” Boujemaa stated.
He further noted that the penal code already contains numerous provisions to address behaviors that violate societal values and protect women from physical, verbal, psychological, and economic violence.
Crucially, the Minister announced the inclusion of new provisions in the draft Code of Criminal Procedure. These provisions aim to provide additional protection to victims of violence, by potentially expanding the scope of protection to include other crimes when the victim’s situation warrants it. This extension will specifically encompass crimes of violence perpetrated against women.
The Minister also highlighted Algeria’s collaboration with international organizations, particularly those affiliated with the United Nations, through the organization of conferences and training workshops for professionals from various sectors. He praised the existing coordination and cooperation among national sectors in pursuit of shared objectives in combating violence against women.
