Algiers – The US Ambassador to Algeria, Elizabeth Moore Aubin, recently met with senior officials from Sonatrach and Alnaft to explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in the energy sector. The discussions build upon the momentum generated by the significant US presence at this year’s NAPEC (North Africa Petroleum Exhibition & Conference).
According to a statement released by the US Embassy, the strong participation of American companies at the exhibition and their engagement with key Algerian energy stakeholders have identified promising new opportunities for bilateral collaboration.
The United States currently stands as the largest foreign investor in Algeria. Ambassador Aubin has previously highlighted that US foreign direct investment accounts for approximately 29% of the total foreign investment in the country.
Furthermore, over 100 American companies are operating within Algeria, spanning diverse sectors including energy, technology, telecommunications, defense, and agriculture, underscoring the breadth of the US economic presence.
Ambassador Aubin emphasized the growing economic ties between Algeria and the United States, noting the frequent announcements of new agreements between the two nations. This, she stated, reflects a shared desire to expand cooperation and strengthen the existing partnership.
The energy sector remains the primary focus of American investment, accounting for approximately 90% of total US investment in Algeria, according to previous statements by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. He stressed that this cooperation holds significant potential, given Algeria’s substantial natural gas reserves and considerable renewable energy capabilities, coupled with the technological and economic strengths of the United States. The meeting signals a continued commitment to strengthening ties between the two countries in this vital sector.
