El Fasher, North Darfur – Harrowing testimonies are surfacing from survivors of alleged atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in and around El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. DZWatch has learned of these accounts, painting a grim picture of escalating violence and human rights abuses in the region.
One survivor, Khalil, 34, recounted a near-death experience after fleeing El Fasher. He detailed how RSF elements allegedly opened fire on a group of 20 men, killing at least 17. Khalil claimed he survived by feigning death during the massacre. “They killed people like flies,” he stated, describing the brutality he witnessed.
The accusations against the RSF extend beyond indiscriminate killings. Reports suggest widespread abductions and sexual violence are also occurring. One 26-year-old, Badr, described being kidnapped along with five others. He said the RSF executed elderly individuals traveling with them and demanded a ransom of $8,000 from his family. When another family couldn’t pay, he claims the RSF shot the hostage on camera while the family watched.
Women in El Fasher are reportedly bearing the brunt of the conflict. Kulthum, 29, spoke of systematic sexual assault against women and girls in the Zamzam camp. She alleged that women were separated from men and subjected to repeated rape. “I was raped several times,” she said, describing how younger women were selected and assaulted after being taken to the camp.
The accounts underscore the urgent need for accountability and protection of civilians in Darfur. The gravity of these accusations, if substantiated, warrants immediate international attention and investigation. The safety and security of the civilian population in El Fasher and surrounding areas remain a paramount concern.
