Algeria Launches First Industrial Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility

Algiers – In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, Algeria has inaugurated its first subsidiary facility dedicated to the treatment of hazardous industrial waste. The facility, located at the Research Center for Semiconductor Technology for Energy in El Harrach, was officially launched today by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamal Baddari.

During an inspection visit to the center, Minister Baddari inaugurated the facility, which is the first of its kind among research centers in the country and has been accredited by the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life. The facility boasts a turnover of DZD 6 million and is designed to treat hazardous industrial wastewater that cannot be discharged through conventional sewage systems. Furthermore, it aims to recycle this waste, contributing to the valorization of research results and adding value to the national economy.

The Minister also inspected the laboratory for distinguishing raw materials using an Electron Probe Microanalyzer (EPMA). He emphasized that this device is unique in Africa and has enabled researchers to discover several rare earths in Algeria.

Minister Baddari also visited the laser and applications laboratory and viewed an exhibition of products and prototypes developed and launched as startups with various project holders hosted at the center. Key strategic projects of the center were also presented.

At the conclusion of his visit, Minister Baddari affirmed that the center has become a factory of economic subsidiaries derived from scientific research, aligning with the new direction of the higher education and scientific research sector to support the national economy within the framework of the government’s program and the President’s commitments. He added that in 2025, the center has established six subsidiaries resulting from scientific research, with a turnover of DZD 120 million. This is expected to increase tenfold by 2027, along with the creation of six startups, reflecting the contribution of scientific research to the national economy and job creation, in accordance with the directives of the President of the Republic.This initiative underscores Algeria’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable development through scientific research and technological advancement.
