Former US President Donald Trump has reportedly advised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to avoid escalating tensions with China over Taiwan. The advice follows a period of heightened diplomatic friction between Tokyo and Beijing, triggered by statements from Takaichi suggesting Japan might consider military intervention in the event of a Chinese attack on the island.
According to sources, Trump’s counsel came during a phone call with Takaichi, which occurred shortly after a separate conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the call with President Xi, the Chinese leader emphasized that the ‘return of Taiwan to China is an integral part of the post-World War II international order,’ a statement interpreted by analysts as a firm reiteration of Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the self-governed island.
While Trump reportedly did not pressure Prime Minister Takaichi to retract her earlier statements, he stressed the importance of avoiding further provocation with Beijing, particularly during this sensitive period in Sino-Japanese relations. The situation is further complicated by increasing military activity in the Taiwan Strait.
Takaichi later confirmed that her conversation with Trump also touched upon US-Japan relations and his recent dialogue with the Chinese President. The Japanese Prime Minister’s earlier remarks regarding a potential military response to a Chinese attack on Taiwan had drawn strong condemnation from China. Beijing summoned the Japanese ambassador and issued warnings to its citizens about traveling to Japan, citing alleged incidents of ‘insult and assault’ against Chinese nationals.
However, the Japanese Foreign Ministry refuted these claims, stating that police data indicates a decrease in crime rates compared to the previous year. Beijing has intensified its rhetoric against Tokyo in recent days, linking Takaichi’s statements to the history of World War II and accusing Japan of reviving ‘militaristic tendencies.’ Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has stated that China ‘will respond firmly in defense of its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the post-war achievements won with blood and sacrifice,’ directly referencing the Taiwan issue.
The situation remains delicate, with potential ramifications for regional stability. Analysts are closely monitoring developments in the region.
