New York – Algeria has played a crucial role in advocating for Palestinian rights during discussions at the United Nations Security Council regarding the proposed Gaza peace plan. According to Riyad Mansour, the Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Algeria submitted vital amendments to the draft resolution, ensuring the preservation of Palestinian interests.
Mansour emphasized Algeria’s commitment during the Security Council’s monthly meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question. He stated that “Algeria, on behalf of Palestine and the Arab Group, presented a number of significant amendments that safeguard Palestinian rights, in conjunction with Somalia and with the support of Pakistan.” He further noted that these amendments garnered broad support from members of the Security Council.
The Permanent Observer explained that while some amendments were incorporated into the final text, others were not. “Algeria persisted until the last moment in its efforts to introduce amendments to the text, including in its national capacity, following the issuance of a statement by the eight Arab and Islamic countries with the United States in support of the resolution,” Mansour added.
Algeria’s actions underscore its continued dedication to the Palestinian cause and its proactive engagement in international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region. The amendments presented by Algeria aimed to strengthen the resolution and ensure that the legitimate rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people are fully recognized and protected.
The developments at the UN come at a critical juncture, with mediators emphasizing the urgency of a Security Council resolution to prevent the collapse of the ceasefire agreement. Algeria’s efforts highlight the importance of multilateral diplomacy and the need for all parties to work together to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
