Talks Underway to Resolve Hamas Fighters’ Encampment in Rafah Tunnels

Negotiations are reportedly ongoing to resolve the predicament of Hamas fighters allegedly trapped in tunnels beneath Rafah. Sources familiar with the discussions confirmed on Thursday that efforts are underway to reach a resolution to the crisis.

According to sources, discussions with mediators, including Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt, as well as the United States, are ongoing in an attempt to break the deadlock. The aim is to find a solution that would allow the Hamas fighters to exit the tunnels located behind the ‘Yellow Line’ in southern Gaza.

Hamas has previously condemned what it describes as the Israeli pursuit of its fighters trapped in the Rafah tunnels, calling it a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement. The organization asserts that it has made significant efforts to resolve the issue, but accuses Israel of undermining these efforts. Hamas is urging mediators to intervene swiftly to facilitate the fighters’ return.

In a statement, Hamas stated that the Israeli pursuit and alleged targeting of fighters trapped in the Rafah tunnels is a clear breach of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and demonstrates ongoing attempts to undermine and destroy the agreement.

Hamas holds Israel fully responsible for the safety of its fighters and calls on mediators to exert pressure on Israel to allow them to return to their homes, recognizing their sacrifice, bravery, and patience.

Israel estimates the number of Hamas fighters in the Rafah area to be around 200. Israeli officials have stated that the Hamas fighters have the choice to surrender or face the consequences within the tunnels.
