Sweden Highlights Algeria as Key Partner Amid Growing Cooperation

Algiers, October 29, 2025 – Algeria stands as a vital partner for Sweden, according to the newly appointed Swedish Ambassador to Algeria, Anna Block Mazoyer. The Ambassador emphasized the strong ties between the two nations during a statement following the presentation of her credentials to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Ambassador Mazoyer highlighted the “deep historical connections” shared by Algeria and Sweden, noting that 2029 will mark the tercentenary of the first Treaty of Peace, Navigation, and Commerce between the two countries. This milestone underscores the enduring nature of their relationship.

Addressing international affairs, the Swedish diplomat commended Algeria’s efforts in promoting “multilateralism and peace,” specifically acknowledging Algeria’s role within the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member. She further stated that “Sweden remembers Algeria’s consistent commitment within the UN framework, a commitment that began during its struggle for independence.”

On the economic front, Ambassador Mazoyer pointed out the presence of numerous Swedish companies operating within the Algerian market, including industry giants such as Volvo, Ericsson, and AstraZeneca. She clarified that trade relations between Algeria and Sweden are facilitated by the Association Agreement between Algeria and the European Union, as well as the Partnership for the Mediterranean, both of which unlock new avenues for collaboration based on mutual benefits.

The Ambassador affirmed Sweden’s commitment to actively pursuing opportunities to strengthen the partnership with Algeria, citing ongoing bilateral cooperation in areas such as energy transition, taxation, and local governance. These initiatives, she explained, are “tangible projects aimed at improving the daily lives of citizens.” Sweden views Algeria as a key player in the region and is dedicated to fostering a stronger, more prosperous relationship in the years to come.
