African Union Suspends Guinea-Bissau’s Membership After Coup

DZWatch, November 28, 2025 – The African Union (AU) has suspended Guinea-Bissau’s membership from all its bodies, effective immediately. This decision follows the military coup that took place earlier this week, which saw the ousting of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

The announcement was made by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, citing the unconstitutional change of government as the reason for the suspension. The military seized power on Wednesday, suspending the recent presidential and legislative elections held on November 23rd, the results of which were pending.

“The Union has decided to suspend, with immediate effect, the membership of Guinea-Bissau in all its bodies,” stated the Chairperson.

On Thursday, the coup leaders appointed General Horta Ntame, the Chief of Staff of the Army, as the head of the Supreme Military Command tasked with restoring order and ensuring a political transition within a one-year period. Former President Embaló reportedly arrived in Senegal on the same day.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Fernando Dias has claimed victory in the disputed presidential election. Dias stated that he is currently in hiding within Guinea-Bissau but remains safe.

The coup has been widely condemned by international organizations. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres denounced the action as a “violation of democratic principles.” The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has also suspended Guinea-Bissau’s membership from all its decision-making bodies.

The situation in Guinea-Bissau remains fluid as the AU and other regional and international actors continue to monitor developments closely. The suspension of membership underscores the African Union’s commitment to upholding democratic governance and constitutional order on the continent.
