DZWatch Exclusive: Tensions are escalating in the Caribbean as speculation mounts regarding potential US military intervention in Venezuela. Recent developments, including a US military operation dubbed “Southern Lance” targeting drug trafficking in the region, have fueled concerns about a possible escalation.
Military analyst Colonel Hatem al-Falahi suggests that the US could be preparing for military operations inside Venezuela. He points to President Trump’s recent announcement of the closure of Venezuelan airspace as a potential indicator of swift military action. However, al-Falahi also notes that an airspace closure might simply be a pressure tactic aimed at the Venezuelan government.
The deployment of F-35 fighter jets and drones to the region further raises the possibility of a US military escalation. Al-Falahi believes any potential intervention would likely be limited, considering the presence of CIA intelligence operatives within Venezuela. He suggests potential US objectives could include pressuring President Maduro to resign, supporting a military rebellion, or conducting strikes against drug trafficking hubs and gang leader locations.
Political pressure remains a key tool, particularly given Venezuela’s strong ties with China, Iran, and Russia. Controlling Venezuelan resources is reportedly a priority for US national security.
The US military buildup includes approximately eight warships, the aircraft carrier Gerald Ford with three support vessels, a nuclear submarine, and a special operations ship. This, coupled with air assets and special reconnaissance forces, suggests that any military operations would be limited in scope but capable of executing precise strikes within the country.
