Algiers – Algerian international star Youcef Belaili has given a revealing interview, offering unprecedented insights into his career, relationships, and personal life. The interview, broadcast on French channel “La Surface” on Saturday, covered key moments and previously undisclosed details.
Belaili, currently recovering from a knee injury while playing for Espérance Sportive de Tunis, shared a unique perspective on his time with the Algerian national team. He emphasized the joy of qualifying for the World Cup after the heartbreak of the Cameroon match: “We made the Algerian people happy… and our goal is to enter the African Cup of Nations with a strong mentality.”
Regarding his experience with Espérance, Belaili praised the competitive environment, stating, “Being at Espérance keeps me in the heart of winning titles… The management, coach, and fans give me great support, and God willing, we will lift the Champions League trophy.” The 31-year-old also expressed his affection for the Tunisian fans: “The people in Tunisia love me… and Tunisia is like my country,” highlighting the special bond he shares with them.
In a rare glimpse into his personal life, Belaili described his lifelong passion for football, recalling how he used to sleep next to his ball and shoes, waking up early with an intense desire to train. He also acknowledged that MC Oran will always hold a special place in his heart and career.
Addressing his departure from French club Ajaccio, Belaili hinted at unfair treatment without going into specifics: “I was betrayed by my representative there… I have faith in justice, and the truth will come out,” suggesting that the issue extends beyond sporting matters.
Belaili also touched upon his strong connection with Baghdad Bounedjah, explaining their seamless understanding on the field due to their years of playing together since youth. He reflected on his most difficult moment, missing a penalty against Ivory Coast in the 2019 African Cup of Nations, but stressed his determination to overcome such challenges.
