Algiers – Algeria is taking decisive steps to bolster its energy security and expand its export capabilities, according to recent directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The nation is celebrating its entry into the refined gasoline export market, a significant milestone achieved through domestic production.
In a move to refine its energy strategy, President Tebboune has called for national energy sessions to update strategic data and adapt to evolving global dynamics. Furthermore, the Prime Minister has been tasked with initiating discussions with Mauritania to establish Naftal fuel stations within Mauritanian territory, strengthening regional energy cooperation.
A key outcome of recent high-level meetings is the formulation of a national plan for fuel consumption rationalization. This includes preparations for the launch of prepaid fuel cards, designed to streamline access to gasoline and potentially curb illicit activities. Emphasis has also been placed on accelerating the completion of the Hassi Messaoud refinery project, a crucial undertaking aimed at significantly increasing Algeria’s production and export capacities.
In a bid to support the national energy company, Naftal has been granted exclusive rights for the import and production of raw materials and oils. This measure is intended to streamline operations and ensure a stable supply chain. Additionally, approval has been granted for the import of 500,000 tires specifically for trucks, buses, and other vehicles, addressing a critical need within the transportation sector.
Beyond energy, Algeria is also focusing on fostering entrepreneurship and strengthening intra-African cooperation. In preparation for the upcoming African Conference on Startups, President Tebboune highlighted the importance of this event as an economic platform connecting African nations with the global market. He emphasized that an “African-to-African” partnership model is the most suitable for building a robust economy based on knowledge and innovation, stressing the need to support and safeguard African youth networks from exploitation.
