Algeria Boosts Minimum Wage, Unemployment Benefits

Algiers, Algeria – In a significant move impacting the nation’s workforce and unemployed citizens, the Algerian Council of Ministers has approved substantial increases to both the national minimum wage and unemployment benefits. The decision, announced earlier today, marks one of the most considerable adjustments in decades.

Effective January 2026, the guaranteed national minimum wage will rise from 20,000 Algerian dinars (DZD) to 24,000 DZD. This increase surpasses the 2020 adjustment, which saw a comparatively smaller rise of 2,000 DZD. The government hopes this measure will alleviate financial pressures on low-income workers and stimulate economic activity.

Furthermore, unemployment benefits are set to increase from 15,000 DZD to 18,000 DZD. President Tebboune has instructed the Ministry of Labor to revise the current requirement for beneficiaries to renew their applications every six months. He emphasized that the benefit is intended to be disbursed for a full year, with the possibility of renewal.

President Tebboune also highlighted the critical role of the National Employment Agency in streamlining the flow of job seekers and establishing a comprehensive national database. This database aims to accurately distinguish between individuals integrated into the workforce and those who remain unemployed. The goal is to improve the efficiency of job placement services and tailor support programs to specific needs.

In addition to these measures, the President has tasked the Minister of Labor with preparing proposals to increase retirement pensions and benefits. These proposals will be presented to the upcoming government meeting and subsequently to the Council of Ministers, signaling a broader effort to enhance social welfare provisions for Algerian citizens. DZWatch will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
