Algeria Eyes Expanded Tech Partnerships with Brazilian Giant WEG

Algiers – Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, held discussions with a high-level delegation from Brazilian technology conglomerate WEG, focusing on expanding existing partnerships and exploring new ventures in Algeria’s energy and mining sectors.

The meeting centered on the current collaboration between WEG and Algerian state-owned companies Sonatrach and Sonarem, with a particular emphasis on broadening the scope of cooperation. Potential projects in oil, gas, and mineral industries were at the forefront of the discussions.

Both parties underscored the importance of advancing technical cooperation, especially in equipment manufacturing, mineral processing, seawater desalination, and digital solutions for industrial facilities management. They also explored ways to boost WEG’s investments in the Algerian market through initiatives aimed at localizing equipment manufacturing and maintenance, aligning with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Sonatrach and WEG in May 2023.

Future Sonarem projects were also addressed, specifically those related to integrating modern technologies in mineral resource exploitation and utilizing renewable energy sources like solar power and energy storage solutions in petroleum and mining ventures.

Furthermore, discussions included a project to establish a national center specializing in electrical equipment maintenance in Algeria. This center aims to enhance local capabilities in advanced maintenance and reduce reliance on external services.

Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s attractive investment opportunities in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors, both domestically and across Africa. He stressed the need to transition to concrete projects with a clear roadmap to expedite joint initiatives, particularly in seawater desalination, promoting local content, and specialized technical training.

WEG’s CEO, Francisco Martinez, expressed the company’s commitment to strengthening its cooperation with Algeria. He affirmed WEG’s desire to establish Algeria as a regional hub for its industrial and technological activities, through technology transfer and the development of training and maintenance capabilities in various energy and mining-related fields.
