Algiers, December 2, 2025 – Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received a delegation from the Brazilian multinational company WEG at the ministry headquarters today. The delegation was led by WEG’s General Manager, Francisco Martinaz.
The meeting focused on reviewing the existing cooperation and partnership between WEG and both Sonatrach and Sonarem, exploring avenues for expansion in the oil, gas, and mining sectors. Discussions emphasized strengthening technical and technological cooperation, particularly in the manufacturing of equipment, mineral processing, seawater desalination and related equipment, and the development of advanced digital solutions for equipment management and operation.
Opportunities for business and investment in Algeria were also assessed, with emphasis on the importance of WEG developing its presence through projects aimed at localizing equipment manufacturing and maintenance, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Sonatrach and WEG in May 2023.
Special attention was given to Sonarem’s mining projects, specifically those related to integrating modern technologies in the exploitation and processing of mineral resources, and the use of renewable energies, such as solar power and energy storage solutions, in oil, gas, and mining projects.
The potential establishment of a specialized center for the maintenance of electrical equipment in Algeria was also discussed, aiming to bolster national capabilities in advanced technical maintenance.
Minister Arkab affirmed that Algeria offers significant opportunities for partnership and investment in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors, both domestically and across Africa. He stressed the need to transition to concrete projects and establish a clear roadmap to ensure their timely realization, with a focus on seawater desalination projects, promoting local content, and specialized training, particularly in the manufacturing and maintenance of equipment.
Francisco Martinaz reiterated WEG’s commitment to strengthening its cooperation with Algeria and developing long-term investments, expressing the company’s desire to make Algeria a regional hub for its industrial and technological activities in the region through technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and the development of maintenance and training capabilities.
