Algiers Declaration Calls for African Day to Honor Colonial Victims

Algiers, Algeria – The “Algiers Declaration,” culminating the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, has called for the establishment of November 30th as an annual “African Day” to honor the martyrs and victims of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and apartheid.

The declaration, released Tuesday, follows a proposal by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. It aims to create a dedicated day of remembrance and reflection on the profound and lasting impact of these historical injustices on the African continent.

The International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa brought together experts, historians, and representatives from across the continent to discuss the legacy of colonialism and its ongoing consequences. Discussions centered on various forms of colonial exploitation, including economic exploitation, political oppression, and cultural assimilation.

“This declaration represents a significant step towards acknowledging the suffering endured by generations of Africans,” said a conference participant. “It is crucial to remember the past in order to build a more just and equitable future.”

The proposed African Day is envisioned as a platform for education, awareness, and reconciliation. Organizers hope it will serve as a catalyst for further research into colonial crimes and provide a space for victims and their descendants to share their stories.

The Algiers Declaration is expected to be presented to the African Union for consideration. If adopted, November 30th will become a day of continental observance, uniting Africans in remembrance and solidarity.

The move reflects a growing global movement to address historical injustices and promote reparative justice for victims of colonialism and slavery. The establishment of an African Day dedicated to these victims would be a powerful symbol of Africa’s commitment to confronting its past and shaping its future.
