Algiers, Algeria – Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Abdelhak Saihi, received the representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Algeria, Lalini Verrasamy, at the ministry headquarters on Tuesday. The meeting highlighted the existing strong collaboration between Algeria and the IOM, according to a ministry statement.
During the meeting, Minister Saihi affirmed his ministry’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the IOM. He proposed scheduling working sessions that would bring together experts from both sides to discuss matters of mutual interest, particularly the issue of irregular migration. He emphasized the ministry’s dedication to exploring avenues for encouraging the voluntary return of irregular migrants to their countries of origin, in consultation with the IOM in Algeria and in agreement with the relevant nations.
Verrasamy expressed her appreciation for the level of cooperation between Algeria and the IOM, acknowledging the facilities provided by Algeria, especially in the areas of training and cooperation aimed at benefiting migrants. She stated that the meeting was part of an effort to expand consultation and exchange views on the phenomenon of irregular migration and to leverage all available opportunities to strengthen partnerships in this area.
The two parties discussed practical proposals aimed at establishing a framework for managing irregular migration through the signing of cooperation agreements with the countries concerned. They also explored prospects for expanding cooperation in 2026, the statement added. The discussions reflect Algeria’s proactive approach to addressing migration challenges in partnership with international organizations.
