Algiers, Algeria – A significant weather disturbance is impacting Algeria today, with 40 provinces (wilayas) currently under alert for heavy rainfall, snowfall, and strong winds. The adverse conditions are expected to persist into the early hours of Thursday.
The national weather service has issued special bulletins warning of potentially hazardous conditions across the country. Several western provinces are bracing for thunderstorms with rainfall exceeding 50mm in some localized areas. There is also a risk of hailstorms. The affected provinces include Tlemcen, Ain Temouchent, Oran, Mostaganem, Chlef, Sidi Bel Abbes, Saida, Mascara, Relizane, Tiaret, and Tissemsilt.
Central and eastern regions are also under a heavy rainfall advisory, effective from midday today until 6:00 AM tomorrow. Provinces impacted include Ain Defla, Tipaza, Algiers, Blida, Medea, Boumerdes, Bouira, Tizi Ouzou, Bejaia, Setif, Jijel, Skikda, Annaba, and El Tarf.
Furthermore, provinces in the southeast and parts of the Sahara are warned of substantial rainfall and thunderstorms. This alert encompasses Bordj Bou Arreridj, Mila, Constantine, Guelma, Souk Ahras, Oum El Bouaghi, Batna, Khenchela, Tebessa, Biskra, Ouled Djellal, El M’Ghair, El Oued, Touggourt, Ouargla, Djelfa, Laghouat, Ghardaia, El Menia, and El Bayadh.
Higher altitude areas in Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbes, Saida, Tiaret, and El Bayadh are expected to experience significant snowfall starting this afternoon and lasting until 9:00 PM.
Strong winds are also a major concern, potentially causing disruptions to traffic and reduced visibility. Provinces affected by high winds include Ain Temouchent, Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbes, Mascara, Naama, El Bayadh, Saida, Tiaret, Laghouat, Djelfa, M’Sila, Ghardaia, El Menia, Touggourt, Ouargla, Tebessa, and Bechar. These winds are expected to last from midday until midnight.
Citizens are urged to exercise caution, especially in areas experiencing heavy rain or snow. Travel on mountain roads and in low-lying areas prone to flooding should be avoided.
