Russian President Vladimir Putin is commencing an official visit to India today, Thursday, aiming to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations across military and economic domains. India stands as a major purchaser of Russian oil.
The two-day visit marks Putin’s first trip to India, the world’s most populous country, since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, which is now entering its fourth year. The visit follows an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the 23rd annual India-Russia summit, commemorating 25 years of their strategic partnership.
A high-level Russian delegation accompanies Putin, including ministers of defense, finance, agriculture, economic development, health, internal affairs, and transport, reflecting the visit’s broad agenda. Discussions are expected to encompass defense cooperation, including fighter jet technology, and collaboration in nuclear energy.
The Putin-Modi summit will review progress in security, technology, transport, education, and cultural cooperation. Defense discussions are likely to focus on supersonic aircraft projects, long-range missiles, and additional S-400 units. Economic talks will address trade imbalances and chart a roadmap for bilateral cooperation until 2030.
India and Russia are expected to sign agreements covering trade, health, agriculture, media, and cultural exchange. Putin and Modi are scheduled to address the India-Russia Business Forum, highlighting investment opportunities, manufacturing partnerships, and technological collaboration. Officials from both countries are exploring mechanisms to shield bilateral transactions from external pressures.
During the visit, Putin will also discuss strategic developments in the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions, as well as India’s energy purchases, amid tightening US sanctions on oil companies. This visit underscores the enduring importance of the relationship between Russia and India. Both nations are seeking to deepen ties in a variety of sectors.
